S.M.I.L.E. Program
We believe in the power of YOUth to make a positive difference in the lives of children born with cleft conditions all over the world. That’s why we’ve created the S.M.I.L.E. (Student Movement Impacting Lives Everywhere) Program! It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3 to get involved!
Through S.M.I.L.E., we challenge your club to set and achieve your collective awareness and fundraising goals and further your compassion and commitment towards our cause. Along the way your team will gain valuable leadership skills, volunteer hours and experience for your future career aspirations!
Get Inspired
These 4 pillars are the foundation of our Student Programs. Whether you are interested in getting involved as an individual student or as part of an Operation Smile Student Club, we need your help to advocate, educate, lead and serve in your schools and communities to help us further our mission.
Advocacy
We inspire youth to be an active voice for communities around the world who lack access to safe, well-timed and effective surgery.
Learn more about how to advocate
- Follow our social media channels! You can find us on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube.
- Plan an awareness day to educate students about cleft lip, cleft palate, safe surgery and Operation Smile.
- Organize a campaign around a national or international awareness day! Some ideas include: Longest Day of SMILES, World Smile Day, Giving Tuesday, International Day of Children, etc.
Education
We instill the value of teaching and learning to promote social responsibility through exposure to authentic experiences, diverse communities and global healthcare.
Learn more about how to educate
- Request an Operation Smile speaker to come and visit your school to talk about our organization and the important work we do overseas (request via email ca-students@operationsmile.org)
- Do your research. Educate yourself about Operation Smile, cleft conditions, and our medical missions.
Leadership
We create the environment to empower youth to become globally-minded activators. We cultivate leadership by facilitating innovative and inspiring programs that teach valuable skills and grow confident leaders.
Learn more about how to be a leader
- High School Students – Consider attending Operation Smile’s Annual International Student Leadership Conference.
- University Students – Consider attending Operation Smile’s Annual University Symposium.
- Organize a U-Lead. This is a program where students lead and organize their own education-driven conferences and workshops to connect with like-minded peers.
Service
We empower youth to understand the importance of being an active participant in helping others locally and globally. We promote opportunities for youth to volunteer and take personal ownership of a cause.
Learn more about how to engage in service
- Mission opportunities for High School Students and University Students differ. High School Students act as Educators, teaching children and their families about a variety of health-related topics.
- University Students act as Storytellers and are responsible for capturing and sharing patient, volunteer and family stories.
